How this check works
No black box — here is exactly what happens when you press the button.
- We run your keyword as a Google search from the city or ZIP you entered, not from wherever you happen to be sitting. Local results are personalised by location, so the search origin changes the answer.
- We read the local results Google returns for that search — the map-backed listings, the same ones a customer sees — and record them in order.
- We match your business by name against that list and report the position it appears at, plus the businesses ranking above you and their review counts and ratings.
- If your business isn't in the results for that search, we tell you that plainly rather than inventing a number. Not appearing is itself useful information — see the FAQ on why that happens.
This is a single-point check: one keyword, one location, one moment in time. It is not a geo-grid scan and it is not a tracker with position history — see the comparison below for which of those you actually need.
What your position actually means
Google shows local businesses in a map-backed block usually called the local pack. Only about three businesses appear there before a searcher has to tap “More places”, which is why the gap between position 3 and position 4 matters far more than the gap between 12 and 15.
Two things surprise most business owners the first time they run a check. The first is that there is no single ranking — proximity is a heavy factor, so you can sit at #2 for someone across the street and be invisible two miles away. The second is that positions move daily on their own. A one-place shift between checks is usually noise, not something you did.
So treat a single check as a snapshot. What matters is the direction across several checks — and whether you are inside that top block for the searches that actually bring you customers. Our guide to ranking higher on Google Maps covers what moves it.
Rank checker vs rank tracker vs geo-grid
These three get used interchangeably and they answer genuinely different questions. Pick by the question you actually have.
| Approach | Answers | History | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-off rank check This tool | Where do I rank right now, for this keyword, in this town? | No | Free |
| Ongoing rank tracking BrightLocal, Whitespark, our SEO plans | Is my position trending up or down over weeks and months? | Yes | Paid |
| Geo-grid scanning Local Falcon | How does my rank change block by block across my service area? | Varies | Paid |
Most local businesses need a checker far less often than they think, and a tracker only once they are actively working on rankings and need to know whether the work is landing. If you are at the “is it working?” stage, tracking is included in our local SEO plans.
Ranked lower than you expected?
Three things move local rankings faster than anything else, roughly in order of effort:
- Reviews — recency and volume both count, and this is the lever you can start pulling today. Our tap & scan review products make leaving one a single tap, and the review calculator shows how many you need to hit your target rating.
- Your Google Business Profile — categories, service area, hours and photos. Run the free local SEO audit to see what's incomplete.
- Citations — consistent name, address and phone across directories. Slowest to move, but it's the one competitors most often neglect.
Working through it yourself? The local SEO checklist walks the whole sequence in order.
Local rank checker: FAQs
How do I check my local ranking on Google?
Enter your business name, the keyword you want to rank for, and your city or ZIP in the tool above. It scans Google's local results for that search and shows where your business appears — the same 'local pack' a real customer sees. You'll get the full report, including who ranks above you, by email.
Is this local rank checker free?
Yes — it's free and needs no account. Enter your details and we'll run the check and email your report. There's no charge and no obligation.
Why does my Google Maps ranking change depending on location?
Local results are personalised by the searcher's location, so your business can rank #2 for someone nearby and not appear at all a few miles away. Proximity to the searcher is one of the strongest ranking factors in local results, which is why this tool asks for a specific city or ZIP — it checks the ranking a customer in that area actually sees, not a national average.
What's the difference between a local rank checker and a rank tracker?
A rank checker is a one-off look at where you stand right now. A rank tracker monitors those positions over time and alerts you when they move. This free tool is the checker; our done-for-you local SEO plans include ongoing weekly tracking.
Is there a free local rank tracker?
Free tools are almost always checkers rather than trackers — a one-off lookup like this one. Tracking means storing a position history, re-running the same searches on a schedule and alerting you to changes, which costs money to run, so it is usually paid. Use this checker for a free snapshot today; if you need the history, that's what a tracker is for.
How often should I check my local rankings?
Monthly is enough for most local businesses. Local results fluctuate daily for reasons that have nothing to do with your site — the searcher's exact location, personalisation and ordinary index churn — so checking daily mostly measures noise. Look for a trend over several checks before concluding anything moved.
Why is my business not showing in the local pack at all?
The usual causes are an unverified or incomplete Google Business Profile, a service area that doesn't cover the location you searched, a business name that doesn't match what Google has on file, or simply being outside the top results the tool scans for that keyword. Verifying your profile and checking your primary category are the first two things to fix.
How can I improve my local ranking?
The biggest levers are a fully optimised Google Business Profile, a steady flow of recent 5-star reviews, consistent citations, and locally relevant website content. Reviews are among the fastest to move — our tap & scan review products make leaving one a single tap.
This tool is a one-off check. Our done-for-you local SEO plans track your positions every week and do the work to climb them — profile, reviews, citations and content.
